Grassland, scrub and limestone cliff faces.

We’ve just finished presenting ‘Landscape and Visual Considerations’ guidance to The Institute of Quarrying Midlands. This follows on from similar presentations to IQ Derbyshire and IQ Yorkshire branches, as part of Health and Safety CPD days earlier in the year.
Simon Higson said that “The updated guide aims to provide an aide-memoir about how negative impacts can be mitigated and where possible, potential effects can be positive. This includes examples of site layout, screening and storage bunds, planting design and final restoration, treatments of built elements and good housekeeping more generally.”
Institute of Quarrying members can claim a free online copy of the guidance or printed copies are also available.
Wingate Quarry (pictured) was notified as a SSSI in 1984 due to its biological interest and was worked for Magnesian Limestone between the mid 18th century and the mid 1930’s. It is one of the largest and most varied examples of magnesian limestone grassland in County Durham.
